LGBT History Month
1st February 2010
February sees the start of LGBT History Month. The idea behind this is similar to that of Black History Month where respective groups showcase characters who have been an inspiration to LGBT people demonstrating their valuable input into society.
One such character that the CWU will be featuring is Alan Turing, who was the first person to decipher messages encrypted by the German enigma machine. Turing was ridiculed for the fact of being gay despite his obvious brilliance. His ability to decipher the secret codes undoubtedly helped the Allies to gain the upper hand during the second world war.
The CWU have announced that it is developing its own CWU LGBT History Exhibition and branches are being invited to sponsor profiles. The National Equality Officer Linda Roy commented "LGBT history month is a very important part of the calendar and our union is committed to growing awareness as to the vital roles that LGBT people played in society both in recent times and further back in history.
