Googlers have been crying out for change since the mass layoffs in early 2023. Leadership’s callous and un-Googley cost-cutting measures stand in contrast to the former motto “Don’t be evil”, and began a sea change of attitudes among the workforce.
In 2023, Googlers made sure that Google followed UK legal minimums when dealing with mass redundancies. This was thanks to the coordinated efforts of Googlers on an organising committee supported by CWU-UTAW and Unite officials, as well as dozens of activists, who delivered letters of concerns signed by hundreds of Googlers.
From the initial wave of layoffs and the ongoing stealth layoffs, interest in unions has grown throughout Google, and we’re now ready for the next stage of our journey.
