CWU supporting Wear Red Day on Friday 21st October
October 20 2016This Friday 21st October is Wear Red Day, organised by Show Racism the Red Card, an anti-racism education charity which was established in 1996. The CWU has been a longstanding supporter of Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) and its links with the organisation have been an integral part of the union’s wider strategy to combat racism in the workplace and in society.
Showing his support for the day, CWU General Secretary Dave Ward said: “We are delighted to take up the campaign and join other trade unions in promoting ‘Wear Red Day’. We are asking for the full support from all our representatives to make Wear Red Day’ a really big success.”
On Friday SRtRC are asking people to wear red and donate £1 to the campaign and the CWU is encouraging its own members to join in. Members are also being asked to support the campaign throughout the day by using the hashtag #WRD16 and tweeting their support to @SRtRC_England and @CWUnews. Dave added: “I would be grateful if Branches could consider making a donation to this fantastic project.”
The CWU is also proud to once again be supporting Black History Month. The month of October has traditionally seen the contribution of black people in society celebrated and to remind wider society of the important role that Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) people have played dating back hundreds of years.
CWU Head of Equality Linda Roy, explained: “Black history month is a very important month, whilst we do not wish to limit BHM to just one month in the year, it is important we remember the achievements that have been made and we have still a long way to go in achieving equality.”
